## Abstract Reduction of cycloheptatriene (I) and cycloheptadiene (II) with 2 equivalents of sodium in liquid ammonia yields ‐ after addition of ethanol ‐ cycloheptadiene and cycloheptene (III), respectively. These reactions proceed via coloured intermediates. Reduction of I with 4 equivalents of
