✦ Synopsis


Miksbauer emission spectroscopy performed with 57&o impbmted in solid hydrogen reveals a single quadrupoIe-split component assigned to an FeH molecule. Thii molecular bond is characterized by a temperature-independent quadrupole splitting tiQ of 2.4(l) mm/s and an isomer shit with respect to a-Fe of 0.59(S) mm/s. The FeH is formed Following dissociation of the Ha molecule due to the highly energetic electron-capture decay process. The molecule persists at least up to 70 K, long after evaporation of the Ha matrix. These results are discussed in connection with previous attempts to observe tire formation of FeH by conveutional rare-gas-matrix isolation_
