β¦ Synopsis
XANES spectra of Co complexes have been measured in solid and solution. The spectra in aqueous solutions were found to remain unchanged at different concentrations, while they were found to differ from those in crystals. These findings suggest that the spectral change does not originate from a long-range effect of the counter ions surrounding the complex ion but from a change in the geometrical and electronic structure of the coordination sphere. The present study shows the origin of the counter-ion effect and also the usefulness of XANES as a sensitive probe for distortions of local structure.
