✦ Synopsis

The center-limb behavior of C2, CH, CN, CO, and MgH lines have been analyzed using five photospheric models. A three-stream model developed by G. Elste gave the most satisfactory results, providing evidence for the existence of inhomogeneities in the photospheric layers --2.5 ~< logzs0oo ~< --0.5.

Several lines of neutral oxygen observed at various positions on the solar disk were used to study the influence of (1) the temperature distribution, (2) the velocity field, and (3) the damping on the line profiles and the abundance of oxygen in the photosphere. From high resolution white light photographs it is determined that the surface density of solar granulation decreases towards limb. A schematic model is proposed to interpret both decrease of surface density and size of granules in the upper photosphere.

Center-limb observations of line-center intensity fluctuations in the Na D and Na 5688 doublets and the Mg 4571 line are described. For small scale structures the rms distributions for the photospheric lines show maxima of 20% at a heliocentric angle of 40 ~ (Mg 4571) and 9% at 20 ~ (Na 5688). The r
