In the title compound, C~9~H~7~N~3~O~2~, the dihedral angle between the triazole and phenyl ring planes is 4.72 (6)°. In the crystal structure, classical inversion dimers arise from O—H...O hydrogen bonds between carboxylic acid groups.

## Abstract Controversial structures have been assigned ^1,2^ to the nitrogen‐containing carboxylic acid which is one of the products formed on hydrolysis of N‐substituted oxazolidinediones‐2,4. The present publication solves the problem in favour of our previous suggestions.
