Abstract
Experimental work is described in which ethane and propane have been autothermally cracked by admixture with air in a reactor packed with alundum spheres. The results obtained confirm those of Deanesly & Watkins^3^ in which high thermochemical efficiencies were reported. It has proved possible to predict the performance of such a reactor operating under varying air to gas ratios and feed rates. These predictions are in agreement with experimental findings and with established rates of combustion. Such calculations should be of value in assessing the economics of largeโscale operations of the autothermic process.
Analysis of product distributions shows that little selective combustion of hydrogen occurs.
