Assimilation of ammonium by the obligate anaerobic bacterium Closlridium acetobufylicirm was accomplished by the pathway: Glutamine synthetase/glutamate synthase. C. ace/ohutylicum also contained an asparagine synthetase, but no glutamate dehydrogenase activity was detected. The glutamine synthetase

Two pathways of ammonium assimilation are known in bacteria, one mediated by glutamate dehydrogenase, the other by glutamine synthetase and glutamate synthase. The activities of these three enzymes were measured in crude extracts from four Rhizobium meliloti wild-type strains, 2011, M15S, 444 and 12

Cycloheximide was shown to inhibit the transport of ions into the xylem of "salt-saturated" barley roots ( H o r d e u m v u l g a t e cv cape), and incorporation of L-[1-14C] leucine into protein within 40-60 rain. Water flow across the roots of whole seedlings was not altered for at least 180 min.
