โœฆ Synopsis

Cycloheximide was shown to inhibit the transport of ions into the xylem of "salt-saturated" barley roots ( H o r d e u m v u l g a t e cv cape), and incorporation of L-[1-14C] leucine into protein within 40-60 rain. Water flow across the roots of whole seedlings was not altered for at least 180 min. Uptake of ions into the cells o f " salt-saturated" roots was not affected for 120 min, but was inhibited when treated with cycloheximide for more than 120 rain. H + effiux from "lowsalt" roots was inhibited by cycloheximide at about the same time as ion uptake. Measurement of ATP levels and Ozuptake indicated that cycloheximide was not acting as an uncoupler of oxidative phosphorylation. The present data are considered to support the view that secretion of ions into the xylem vessels involves a specific protein with a short effective half-life, and is a separate process from active uptake into the cortical cells.

Despite being lipophilic, morpholine fungicides are systemic in plants. Such transport may be explicable by their protonation (pKa D 7ร‰5) at the pH of plant compartments to yield the more polar cation. This behaviour might be a useful attribute to be incorporated into other classes of lipophilic pes

Cycloheximide (20-200 mg/l) did not affect basal D-[U-14C]xylose uptake by rat soleus muscle (2.4 +/- 0.2 mumol . g-1 . h-1). However, the stimulatory effect of insulin on sugar transport was progressively reduced from 375% above basal in control muscles to 170% in muscles exposed to 200 mg cyclohex
