Abstract

The possibility of analysing data on light scattering by polydisperse aerosols using the Rayleigh–Gans approximation is considered. We show that this approximation may be used to determine the mean radius of a polydispersion from measurements of light scattered in the near‐forward direction by correcting for the systematic errors involved. However, neither the absolute normalization of the phase function nor the multispectral extinction data may be usefully analysed by this method to obtain the mass loading.
