✦ Synopsis

The quantum-mechanical impulse approximation is applied to vibrational excitation of a diatomic molecute by collinear collision with a third atom. Our calculations are compared with other theoretical results (exact quantummechanical, semi-classical, classical) and with experimental data from O:-He collisions.
