✦ Synopsis

In two recent papers, the anodic oxidation of mercury(II)-olefin complexes in acidic, aqueous solution has been discussed 1'2. These complexes are known to contain a a carbon-mercury bond and it was proposed that the initial step in the oxidation of the complexes to a mixture of carboxylic acids was the anodic cleavage of this bond to produce a carbonium ion and free mercuric ion.

The electronic structures of a series of phenols, phenoxyl cation radicals and phenoxyl radicals were calculated by the AM1 method. On the basis of the presumed electrochemical reaction, the electronic structure criteria determining the antioxidant activity are discussed. Ionization potentials, abso
