Rmgdlsc voltammetrlc experiments on antimony m H,SO, solutions show that a partly passlvatmg oxide layer IS formed on the metal surface preventmg oxygen evolution Due to the Ionic conductlvlty and/or porosity of the layer the dlssolutlon of the metal proceeds through the layer, and Its rate 1s controlled by chffuslon m the layer Antimony IS &solved mamly m the trivalent state Based on the determmatlons of the Tafel coefficient the mechamsm of dlssolutlon IS dependent on the acid concentration In the case of the lead-antimony eutectlc the formation of a semlpermeable lead sulphate membrane retards the rate of dlssolutlon UC Impedance measurements on antimony show features of a simple paswatlon process, eg a negatwe polarization resistance after the maximum In the current The effect of mass transfer through the oxide layer IS also observed Thus the (IC Impedance measurements confirm the mterpretatlon given above
