✦ Synopsis

Multichannel analysis (MCA) of single peaks has been used in this l a b o r a t o r y ' and e l s e ~h e r e 2 ~3 ~~ for several years. This method (sometimes denoted as "CATting") allows the acquisition of mass spectral peaks in order to determine their accurate mass and hence provide an elemental composition for an unknown. This technique has proved useful in acquiring accurate mass data on very small peaks since they are integrated over a period time. While the amount of sample required for the analysis of a particular peak was quite small, the technique suffered from having to do a separate experiment for each mass spectral peak of the sample.
