โฆ Synopsis
If I should be in danger of attending a party thrown by The Independent's (U.K.) food connoisseur, Keith Botsford, I hope someone will warn me. His Weekend Food column for 2 January, 1988 was devoted to the virtues of his champagne. One of these reads as follows: 'I have seldom thrown a party, or been at one, without finding substantial remains in glasses and bottles. By saving them and adding them to a little fresh (a split will do), you can do wonders. '
What, I wonder?
The same article also uses a tiresome analogy about champagne that I would like to see put to rest. Champagne is rarely drunk by the rich and famous of the gossip-column variety. It is apparently dispensed through a hose.
And this article was no exception. Writing of the head of public relations for Moet and Chandon, we read that his daily consumption is 'a little over four bottles of wines and spirits' and that 'at 8.30 a.m. he has downed a dozen oysters along with blood puddings, all washed down with champagne. ' Would that I had this gentleman's constitution (I would not say the same for his liver), ascribed to the 'curative and restorative powers of Underberg '.
