โฆ Synopsis
C'est magnifique, mais ce n'est pas la gare
We have commented earlier on our wish that advertising copy writers would consult with the makers of the product to be advertised, to be sure that the promotion bears some resemblance to reality. Here is another facet of the same problem, this time accuracy of translation.
The international edition of Japan Air Lines' timetable for November-December 1985 carries this advertisement: 'Try Hakushika, you will be usually flushed with it. It is the best of Japanese refined Sake. '
Of course, life would be duller without these fractured phrases and in drawing attention to them one risks being labelled as patronking to enterprises who are trying valiantly to enter the English-language market. Nevertheless, one always wonders why the advertiser or the agency does not have the translation checked by someone in whose native tongue the copy is being written? I myself would no more think of going into print in a foreign language than I would of flying. Or are some of these outrages deliberate? After all, Hakushika got a free advert from this one.
