An efficient process for converting the energy stored in electronically excited NF(a'A) into blue-green BiF (A-X) band emissions has been discovered. Bismuth atoms are converted to BiF and then repeatedly pumped to the (AO') state in two steps via collisions with NF(a'A). A model has been formulated

✦ Synopsis
The electronic states and spectra of the bismuth monofluoride radical have been studied by LIF and Fourier-transform spectrometry. With laser excitation of the n= 1 states A,1 and C31, fluorescence spectra of the transitions A,1 +X,0+, A31 --f X21, A,1 + a2 and C?l --)X,0+, C,l + a2 were observed. Some bands of the C,l --) a2 system were measured at medium spectral resolution with the FT spectrometer. Analysis of the spectra yielded the following molecular constants of the a2 state (in cm-'): T, = 12076.7 + 1, oc = 536.2, wdc, = 2.30. The a2 state of BiF is found to be populated in the reaction of Bi, vapour with F, and by near-resonant electronic energy transfer from metastable NF( a 'A ) molecules.

The emission spectra of the a 1 D(a2) r X 2 1 transitions of BiCl, BiBr, and BiI have been observed in the near-infrared spectral region near 2 mm. The bismuth halide radicals were generated and excited in a fast-flow system by reaction of bismuth vapor (Bi x ) with the halides and microwave-dischar
