โœฆ Synopsis

was the third in a series of biennial symposia designed to host presentations of the latest research pertaining to the utilization of coal combustion products (CCPs). The University of Kentucky Center for Applied Energy Research (CAER), the United States Department of Energy, and the journal FUEL sponsored the Symposium to address issues that are currently of importance to the high-volume and high-value utilization of CCPs.

The 1999 Symposium covered many aspects of CCP utilization, including fundamental chemistry and mineralogy, new products, health and environmental aspects, economic development issues, agricultural and mine reclamation applications, and ยฏy ash beneยฎciation technologies. The Symposium was well attended, with approximately 300 participants and 100 presentations. The Barton A. Thomas Memorial Award, which formally recognized the presentation judged to be the most outstanding of the Symposium, was bestowed upon Dr Xavier Querol of the Institute of Earth Sciences Jaume Almera', CSIS, in Barcelona, Spain. Dr Querol's presentation was entitled, Synthesis of Zeolites from Fly Ash in a Pilot Plant Scale: Examples of Potential Environmental Applications'. This award was made possible by Virginia Thomas and was sponsored by the University of Kentucky CAER.

Formal presentations combined with informal discussions amongst the participants over the course of the Symposium were effective media for fostering the innovative, highvolume, and responsible utilization of all types of CCPs, in an increasing number of applications. According to the
