✦ Synopsis

During the past two years, a simple theory that seeks to explain what causes the progression of HIV-infected individuals to AIDS has been gaining support. The theory holds that HIV-infected people switch from a T-helper type 1 1Thl) to a T-helper type 2 (Th2) state as the disease progresses. However the experimental data do not support the concept that a Thl/ThZ switch occurs in the majority of HIV-infected subjects, although it is conceivable that HIV-infected individuals who mount sustained and chronic Th2-type responses, as a result of allergic disorders and helminthic infestations, may undergo more active HIV replication and therefore progress faster to full-blown disease.

The role of TGF-g 1 in the regulation of T cell responses has been perplexing, possibly because it is dependent on the type of T cell being regulated and its cytokine microenvironment. In the present study, we demonstrate that TGF-g 1 has a profound inhibitory effect on naive CD4 + T cell undergoing

## Abstract We characterized dendritic cells (DC) phenotypically and functionally between C57BL/6 (Th1‐prone) and BALB/c (Th2‐prone) mouse recipients in an in vivo sensitization model. Two strains of mice were presensitized with Lewis rat splenocytes as xenogeneic antigens. We found that BALB/c rec

The study of autoimmune disease in the context of T-helper type 1 (Th1) and T-helper type 2 (Th2) CD4+ T-cell responses demonstrates that the relative contribution of either T-cell type to the development of a particular autoimmune response can influence whether or not this response leads to clinica
