β¦ Synopsis
The major objective is to encourage practising engineers to prepare manuscripts of about 4 to 12 printed pages. These contributions may not include details of the (available) procedures used, but rather concentrate on the specific problem solved, factors that required use of numerical and/or analytical procedure(s), determination of stress-strain parameters, and results including analysis and design and correlations with conventional design methods and observations.
In order to maintain a balance between theory and application oriented papers in the journal, we plan to expedite the review and publication of papers involving practical applications. CORRECTION J. D. MurfT, 'Undrained stability of shallow vertical holes', Int. j . numer. anal. methods geomech., 7 , 357-370 (1983).
The FEM result for the uniform, self weight case is in error due to convergence problems. The stability number for d / r = 4 should be significantly larger. A more complete correction will be published subsequently in Letters to the Editor.
