Kurt Lewin's work opened to experimental study a realm of human functioning that was essentially ignored by the experimental psychology of his time: the interactions of cognitions, affects, and behavior. Contributing to this achievement was his remarkable ingenuity in devising experiments applicable

✦ Synopsis
While it is possible to link systems thinking and the practice of systems engineering to ancient cultures, this paper seeks to trace the modern history of systems engineering from 1950 to 1995. This retrospective view is intended to provide readers an insight and appreciation of the past contributions of a few of the many researchers, educators, system thinkers, and organizations to the evolutionary development and application of systems engineering. Space and my own limitations prevent the recognition of many more individuals and organizations that have made significant contributions to the systems engineering body of knowledge.
