β¦ Synopsis
Evaluation of 386 case histories of synringomyelia revealed that 40 of these patients had suffered a severe trauma before the onset of the neurological symptomatology. The present data suggest that in 24 patients trauma represents a pathogenic factor in the manifestation of the symptoms. 31icrotraumas occurring during severe physical strain may also be of importance. 2/3 of the male patients had been engaged in hand physical work while this was true of only 1/3 of a control group. This relationship was found to exist in small as well as in large communities in the area of Lower Franconia. The sex incidence of the disease is shown to be 2:1 male/female. Similar results to those found in Lower Franeonia were also observed in 5 towns in different parts of Germany.
The discussion deals with the question as to whether or not exogenous factors affecting the spinal canal may play a major role in the development of the neurological symptoms associated with syringomyelia in addition to predisposition.
