## Abstract O,S‐Diethyl methylthiomalonate was efficiently condensed with paraformaldehyde‐^13^C in the presence of sodium methoxide to give 2‐[^13^C]‐hydroxymethylated product, which was converted to 2‐[^13^C]‐bromomethyl product by treatment with triphenylphosphine and carbon tetrabromide.

The synthesis o f a 2% mixture o f taurine-l3Cz, i n nonlabelled taurine i s presented. taurine was prepared i n two steps as a new and p o t e n t i a l l y useful probe for 13C0, breath tests i n the diagnosis o f i n t e s t i n a l malabsorption. Unique analytical data are presented, including gas chromatographic and mass spectral data of a derivative of taurine, N-carbobenzyloxytaurine amide. These new results were essenti a1 for the characterization and determination o f isotopic enrichment o f the 2% labelled taurine probe. experiments w i t h t h i s stable, i s o t o p i c a l l y labelled mixture are also discussed.
