✦ Synopsis

a-Keto acid derivatives are versatile intermediates in organic synthesis. Previously, we have described several methodologies for the synthesis of these compounds, including cyanation of acyl chlorides, cyanocarbonylation of organic iodides, and double carbonylation of organic halides in the presence of se~-amines['-~]. We have now found that dehydrogenation of a-hydroxy esters and nitriles can be effected smoothly by tert-butyl hydroperoxide under very mild conditions in the presence of catalytic amounts of ruthenium compounds (Table 1).

The novel and versatile cyanomethyl 2amino-4-methylthiazolyl ketone (5) was prepared by treatment of bromomethyl 2-amino-4-methyl thiazolyl ketone (4) with potassium cyanide. Reaction of 5 with heterocyclic diazonium salts 6a,b and 10 afforded the corresponding hydrazones 7a,b and 11, respectively.
