2-Methyl-1,4-benzenediol (10) was acylated with a-chloroisobutyroyl chloride and converted by treatment with AlCl 3 into the indanone derivative 12, which was elaborated into the substituted indane acid 24. Oxidation then afforded racemic puraquinonic acid.
