Abstract
Summary: A [TiCl~2~(salen)] complex and its derivatives with the formula [TiCl~2~(L)] [Lโ=โsalen(__t__Bu), salen(diโMe), salen(diโ__t__Bu), salen(Me)] were synthesized in high yield by reacting the Schiffโbase ligands with TiCl~4~. [TiCl~2~{salen(__t__Bu)}] and [TiCl~2~{salen(diโ__t__Bu)}] have been characterized by singleโcrystal Xโray diffraction. Styrene polymerizations carried out with [TiCl~2~(salen)] and its derivatives coโcatalyzed by MAO yielded syndiotactic polystyrenes. The catalytic activity and syndiospecificity were dependent on the bulkiness of the ortho substituents in the aryl ring of ligand.
