✦ Synopsis
Adsorption of various ligands onto maghemite particles has been investigated in aqueous medium aiming at the production of magnetic liquids (ferrofluids) stable in a large rRn~e of pH. The formation of complexes with the structural iron of the surface oxide causes drastic changes in the stability of the colloid dispersion. The flocculation ranges have been established as a function of pH for maghemite particles in presence of ligands such as a-hydroxy or thiol polycarboxyHc acids and arginine hydroxamate. The stability behavior of the systems has been correlated with adsorption isotherms.
