✦ Synopsis

Polycyclic thiazoles, 6a and b, have been synthesised and the enantiomers resolved.

Alkylation gave chiral thiazolium salts which catalyse the dimerisation of benzaldehyde to give benzoin with enantiomefic excesses up to 26%. Reasons for these results are discussed.
