F u r a n -2 -l CJcarboxylic a c i d h a s been prepared in 74% yield by carbonation of 2-furyllithium. Furan-2-fi4CTaldehyde w a s isolated a s the d i a c e t a t e after c a t a l y t i c reduction of the corresponding a c i d chloride. Nitration g a v e 5nitrofuran-2-[14CJaldehyde dia ceta te and after hydrolysis to the aldehyde w a s condensed with 4hydroxybenzhydrazide to give 5-nitrofuran-2 -L l 4 0aldehyde 4'-hydroxybenzoylhydrazone , 0 4 C 3nifuroxazide, in a n overall radiochemical yield of 15% from barium [14CI-carbonate.
