β¦ Synopsis
The cross-linked chain cobalt oxychloride Ba 5 Co 5 ClO 13 is reported. Single crystals were obtained by a 6ux method with BaCl 2 . A hexagonal unit cell (P6 3 /mmc, a β«Ψβ¬ 5.6980(8) A s and c β«Ψβ¬ 24.469(5) A s ) was found. The Ψ 3 and Ψ 4 valence cobalt ions were formally distributed into octahedral and tetrahedral sites coordinated by oxide ions. The compound was electrically insulating with a gap of 0.25 eV along the chain. Antiferromagnetism was found, with substantial ferromagnetic character, suggesting that the magnetic ground state is complex.
