✦ Synopsis
Novel high molecular-weight aromatic-aliphatic homo-and copolyamides were synthesized in high yields by direct polycondensation of 2,3,5,6-tetramethyl-l,4-diaminobenzene and m-phenylene diamine with eicosanedioic acid. The polymers were characterized by elemental analyses, FT-IR and carbon-13 NMR spectra. Their thermal properties were evaluated by means of TGA and DSC. Mesomorphic behaviour was checked by observation of optical texture with a polarizing microscope. m-Phenylene unit-rich polymers exhibit well-defined thermotropic liquid crystalline phases and have lower glass-transition temperatures.
