✦ Synopsis
The first layered cobalt (II) oxide halides, Sr 2 CoO 2 Cl 2 and Sr 2 CoO 2 Br 2 , have been synthesized and their structures determined from Rietveld refinement of powder X-ray data. The materials are structural analogues of the K 2 NiF 4 cuprate phase Sr 2 CuO 2 Cl 2 , crystallizing in space group I4=mmm: The compounds contain CoO 2 square planes separated by SrX layers (X=Cl;Br). The bromide material displays the expected increase in cell dimensions, i.e., for Sr 2 CoO 2 Cl 2 , a ¼ 4:06251ð5Þ ( A, c ¼ 15:1251ð3Þ ( A and for Sr 2 CoO 2 Br 2 , a ¼ 4:08891ð7Þ ( A, c ¼ 16:4077ð4Þ ( A.
