✦ Synopsis
Magnesium-anthracene systems are of interest owing to their catalytic properties. ['] We report here the synthesis, chemical and spectroscopic characterization, and crystal structure of 1,4-dimethylanthracenemagnesium~ 3 thf 2 and of p-trichlorodimagnesium . 6 thf(1 +) anthracenide 6 (thf = tetrahydrofuran).
2 is prepared analogously to anthracenemagnesium .3 thf [ I c , ' ] 5 , from 1,4-dimethylanthracene 1 and magnesium in THF. Protolysis of the orange solid affords solely 1,4-dimethyl-9,1O-dihydroanthracene 3, along with T H F and traces of 1.
