โœฆ Synopsis


A b s t r a c t Six new p-phthalato binuclear oxovanadium(1V) complexes, namely [(VO)z(PHTH)-(L)2]SO, (L denotes '2,2'-bipyridine (bpy); 1,lO-phenanthroline (phen); 4,4'-dimethyl-2,2'-bipyridine (Mezbpy); 5-nitrcz1 ,lO-phenanthroline (NOZ-phen); 5-chIo~1,lO-phenanthroline (C1-phen) and 5methyl-1,lO-phenanthroline (CHJ-phen), where PHTH is the phthalate dianion), have been synthesized and characterized by elemental analyses, IR, electronic spectra, magnetic moments at room temperat u n and molar conductivity measurements. The temperature dependence of the magnetic susceptibility of complexes [(VO)z(PHTH)(phen)2]SO4 (1) and [(VO)Z(PHTH)(CH~-~~~~)~]SOI (2) waa measured in 4-300 K range and the observed data were successfully simulated by the equation based on the spin Hamiltonian operator, H = -~J > ~. S Z ,

giving the exchange integrals J=-12.8 cm-' for 1 and J=-7.9 cm-l for 2. This indicates an antiferromagnetic spin-exchange interaction between the metal ions within each molecule.
