โฆ Synopsis
A calcium-selective photochromic chelator to study the effects of physiological [Ca 2+ ] oscillations on proteins in vitro or in vivo has been designed. The novel 2,2%-spirobi[2H-1-benzopyran] derivative 1 has been synthesized and the ion complexation properties of 1 with Mg 2+ , Ca 2+ , and Sr 2+ in aqueous buffered solution have been investigated. The chelator 1 shows modest selectivity for calcium ion (K 11 =6720 M -1 ) over magnesium ion (K 11 =564 M -1 ) by 1 H NMR titration.
