Ethyl β‐(2‐oxo‐3‐methyl‐3‐carbethoxy‐6‐cyclohexenyl)‐propionate (I) was synthesized via diethyl α‐methyl‐β‐oxo‐pimelate (Va) and the Michael‐addition of diethyl malonate studied.
