Extensive reviews of current knowledge concerning five important topics were summarized by the authors. Each review was supplemented by several invited papers and discussions. These were followed by general oral discussion of each topic.
Prof. J. C. Jaeger (Australian National University, Canberra) reviewed current ideas on "The brittle fracture of rocks". Supplementary papers were presented by: W. F. Brace and J. D. Byerlee, "Recent experimental studies of the brittle fracture of rocks"; H. C. Heard, "The influence of environment on the brittle fracture of rocks"; and E. Hock, "Practical application of fracture analysis".
Dr. N. G. W. Cook (Chamber of Mines, Johannesburg) reviewed current ideas on "The design of underground excavations". Supplementary papers were presented by: W. C. McClain, "The effect of non-elastic behaviour of rocks"; L. A. Obert, "Rock stresses and underground design"; and J. J. Reed, "Underground excavation and support".
Prof. D. U. Deere (University of Illinois, Urbana) reviewed current ideas on "The design of surface and near-surface construction in rock". Supplementary papers were presented by: R. E. Goodman and R. L. Taylor~ "Methods of analysis for rock slopes"; K. S. Lane, "Slides of reservoir slopes"; R. H. Merrill, "Stresses in the vicinity of rock slopes"; and A. A. Schilling, "Near surface construction in rock".
Dr. W. C. Maurer (Esso Production Research Company, Houston) reviewed current ideas on "Rock drilling". Supplementary papers were presented by: J. J. Bailey, "Energy considerations in the removal of rock, and 'intelligent' drilling"; J. B. Cheatham Jr. and P. F. Gnirk, "Mechanics of rock failure associated with drilling at depth"; K. E. Gray, "Recent laboratory experiments in rock drilling"; B. Paul and M. Gangal, "On the mode of failure of compressed rock"; and R. Simon, "Rock fragmentation by concentrated loading".
Dr. G. B. Clark (University of Missouri, Rolla) reviewed current ideas on "Rock blasting". Supplementary papers were presented by: J. T. Cherry, "Computer calculations of explosion produced craters"; W. I. Duvall, T. C. Atchison and D. E. Fogelson, "Vibrations from quarry blasting and comparison of explosives"; W. Goldsmith, "Wave propagation in rock"; and A. M. Starfield, "Strain wave theory in rock blasting".
The entire symposium proceedings will be published later as a single volume by the Society of Mining Engineers of A.I.M.E. Enquiries should be addressed to John V.
