launched the idea of an international journal 'Regulated Ri6ers: Research and Management', the first issue of which appeared in 1986. Since then, seven international symposia have been regularly organised, alternatively in Europe and in North America and fourteen volumes of the journal have been published promoting interdisciplinary research concerned directly or indirectly with the management of rivers from all over the world. During this period of time, our knowledge has been deeply modified by continuous progress in our understanding of the structure and function of river ecosystems.
