โœฆ Synopsis

Since then, much has been learned regarding how dams, channelization, water diversions and other schemes affect geomorphic processes, and the structural and functional properties of the biotic communities. Certainly there remains much more to be learned, nevertheless, the present state of knowledge provides a solid base to develop regulation schemes to revitalize the structural and functional properties typical of free flowing streams and to maintain or restore biodiversity. Indeed, there is an urgency for such efforts as fragmentation of habitats increase, populations of many lotic species continue to decline, and the overall rate of species extinction increases. Consequently, the theme of SISORS III was 'managing regulated rivers for biodiversity'.

The keynote address delivered by Professor James V. Ward (co-authored with Klement Tockner and Fritz Schiemer) focused on maintaining biodiversity in floodplain river systems. In all, 76 papers were presented by the 106 attendees from 15 countries. Presentations covered a wide array of topics, ranging from large scale river rehabilitation projects to providing new insights into the dynamics of natural and regulated streams.

SISORS III included an all day excursion to the Blue Ridge and Chatuge hydroelectric projects to view measures that the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) has taken to improve water quality and restore biodiversity in major tributaries to the Tennessee River.

I thank the authors and reviewers of the papers included in this volume, and the staff and students of the Tennessee Cooperative Fishery Research Unit for their notable assistance at the symposium. Additional papers presented at SISORS III will be published in other issues of Regulated Ri6ers.
