Intelligibility tests were performed by teachers and pupils in classrooms under a variety of (road traffic) noise conditions. The intelligibility scores are found to deteriorate at (indoor) noise levels exceeding a critical value of -15 dB with regard to a teacher's long-term (reverberant) speech le

โฆ Synopsis
The results of a survey o/schools in Hong Kong exposed to road traJfic and aircraft noise are reported. The purpose o/~ the survey was not to assess individual schools but to produce noise exposure data on all the schools in the city. The results oJ the stud), are presented as a tool with which the existence and severity oJ the problem can be assessed and with which decision-makers can examine the ramifications oJsetting diJJ~,rent noise level standards'. The sampling procedures used to collect data rapidly and of sujficient accuracy Jor the purposes of the study are reported. Some observations are made on how such results should be interpreted by the acoustician Jot" the non-specialist decision-maker.
