✦ Synopsis

Ah&met-The moment-of-momentum balance for moving surfaces tiith simultaneous mass transfer to the adjacent phases is developed to show that the surface stress tensor is symmetric. The momentum balance previously presented by SCRIVEN is extended to account for the effects of mass transfer between the surface and the adjacent phases. The tangential component of the momentum balance.

given by SCRIWN is shown to be valid either when the surface has no normal component of velocity or when the surface mass density is vanishingly small. SCRIVEN [I ; 2, Ch. lo] correctly considers the mass and momentum balances in moving surfaces, the latter only in the case of no mass interchange with the surroundings. The primary intentions here are to derive the moment-of-momentum balance, to point out the limitations on the tangential component of the momentum balance presented by SCRIVEN, and to extend the results to the important situation where there is mass transfer with the adjacent bulk phases.
