✦ Synopsis

In order to investigate the influence of surface tension gradients on surface renewal in distillation columns, the performance of a pool column (i.e. with a fixed interfacial area) has been investigated. Surface tension gradients were changed by varying the driving force, while the average composition was the same in all experiments.

It appeared that the efficiency (N,) is higher for positive than for negative gradients. N, changes most probably as a result of interfacial flow caused by the longitudinal surface tension gradient.
