X-ray photoelectron spectra have been used for characterizing changes in the chemical state and composition of the clean surface of single (potassium chromate) and (potassium dichromate) crystals with Cr(VI) K 2 CrO 4 K 2 Cr 2 O 7 due to air exposure and argon ion bombardment. Their clean surface wa
