✦ Synopsis
High-resolution resonant photoemission (PE) studies of a-like metallic Ce systems reveal much less a-like character at the surface than in the bulk. For strongly hybridized Ce compounds like CeRh> the bulk 4f-PE spectra and, in particular, the Bremsstrahlung isochromate spectroscopy (BIS) spectra are found to be better described on the basis of 4f-and 5d-density of states from LDA band structure calculations than by a single impurity (SI) Anderson model. These results demonstrate a band-like character of the highly correlated 4f states in strongly a-like Ce systems and mark the limits of applicability of the SI model.
