Two regioisomeric β£-phenyl-β€-pyridylacrylic acids were hydrogenated with cinchonidine (CD)-modified Pd/C. The low ee obtained was attributed to the strong adsorption of the substrate, which caused desorption of CD from the catalyst surface. The ee was improved at the low substrate/CD ratio up to 82%
Asymmetric hydrogenation of ketopantolactone was studied on a 5 wt% Pt/Al 2 O 3 catalyst in the presence of cinchonidine and its O-methyl, -ethyl, -phenyl and -trimethylsilyl derivatives. Inversion of enantioselectivity with the latter two bulky substituents proved that in the enantiodifferentiating
