## Abstract A strain of __C. purpurea__ has been isolated which will produce L‐tryptophan from indole in submerged culture. The L‐tryptophan produced is extracellular and in a free form. Levels of up to 1Β·5 mg/ml of L‐tryptophan have been obtained.
