โœฆ Synopsis

The 1.704 MeV level in 206Pb has been excited with electron bremsstrahlung and the resonantly scattered radiation observed with a 45 cm3 Ge(Li) detector. From the scattering yield, a value FO*/F = 6.2 =t 0.6 meV was obtained. A self-absorption experiment gave F, = 9.8 & 1.8 meV. The experimental width for the Ml transition to the ground state is approximately one third of the width expected on the basis of the most recent shell model calculations. It is suggested that at least part of this reduction is caused by weak components in the %06Pb wavefunctions originating from the coupling to strong Ml excitations in zoaPb.

## Capabilities of the resonance jluorescence technique are discussed. Specific reference is given to the study of ground state dipole and electric quudrupole transitions below about 5 MeV in ZQePb, 207Pb, zoaPb andzoo Bi. It is suggested that many of the states observed in z07Pb and zOsBi arise f
