โœฆ Synopsis

Picosecond photothermal/photoacoustic measurement of gold interfaces in some aqueous solutions of electrolytes was carried out using a transient reflecting grating (TRG) method. As the electric potential became more anodic, the TRG-induced diiactedlight intensity increased above that expected from the reflectivity change, and the transient waveform also changed, both in the electrical double-layer and Faradaic oxidation regions. These changes were related to the anions in the supporting electrolyte. These results are discussed with respect to the photothermal and photoacoustic effects at the nanometer-scale interface.

The diffracted signal from a thermal grating formed by radiationless processes is proposed as a method for measuring energy deposition quantum yields. The deposition quantum yield a few ns after pumping of iron(lI1) tetraphenylporphyrin chloride is found to be O-93\*0.07 using this new technique.

Transient grating spectroscopy using a femtosecond white-light continuum was developed and applied to the spectral analysis of intersystem crossing of benzophenone in solution. The diffraction spectra corresponding to S&S, and T.-T, transient absorption were observed for the first time. The rate con
