I n the course of studying allatectomized adult roaches (Bodenstein, '53), it was noticed that their fat bo'dy had a different texture from that of normal individuals. It was soon discovered that this was caused by the absence of urates which are present in great quantities in the normals fat body. The fat content of the fat body also seemed affected by allatectomy. These accidental observations pointed towards a causal relationship between hormone activity and metabolism. I n order to gain more precise information on this interesting problem, a number of new experiments were designed, the results of which are reported here.
Methods
The animals were allatectomiaed by the same metho'd described in an earlier paper (Bodenstein, '53). Urate observations were made on the living fat body tissues at dissection, where the amount of urates present was estimated under the high power of the dissecting scope by arbitrarily distinguishing five classes 0-4. Zero represents a fat body with no urates, and 4 one containing the normal amount. These estimations were confirmed by histological examination of sectioned material. The effects of the p-carbolines, harmaline, harmalol, harmane, and harmine on 5-hydroxytryptamine, dopamine, and tryptophan concentrations in the cerebral ganglion of the cockroach (Periplanela americana) were investigated. Injections of harmaline and harmine-induced decreases in the concentrations
