Three p o p u l a t i o n s of r e t a r d e d i n d i v i d u a l s were s u rveyed and t h e f r e q u e n c y of t h e f r a (X) w a s found t o b e 1 . 9 % i n males and 0.3% i n females. STUDY POPULATIONS W e have completed s u r v e y s of 3 p o p u l a t i o n s of m e n t a l l y r e t a r d e d i n d i v i d u a l s i n H a w a i i i n o r d e r t o d e t e r m i n e t h e p r e v a l e n c e of t h e f r a (X) syndrome. W e made no a t t e m p t t o s e l e c t on t h e b a s i s o f phenotype o r f a m i l y h i s t o r y i n any of t h e 3 p o p u l a t i o n s b u t made e v e r y e f f o r t t o o b t a i n a blood sample from a l l i n d i v i d u a l s i n t h e s t u d y g r o u p s .
