✦ Synopsis

T h e in vitro peripheral lymphocyte response to phytohemagglutinin (PHA)

was correlated with the clinical and immunologic status in 44 patients with chronic lymphocytic leukemia. T h e mean lymphocyte response was only slightly below the normal range a t day 3 of culture in patients in remission; but a majority of these patients showed delayed maximum responses. I n contrast, the PHA response was markedly depressed a n d delayed in patients with active disease. T h e lymphocyte response to PHA was well correlated with the duration of disease, the status of disease, the status of therapy, the degree of lymphocytosis, a n d the status of immunoglobulin level in patients with this disease.
